BGF wins Honour Award for HIV Hero
The Bobby Goldsmith Foundation (BGF) has been recognised as an HIV Hero at this year's Honour Awards. The award, which recognises outstanding contributions to the HIV sector was accepted by BGF CEO Nick Lawson at the ceremony last night.
This recognition is particularly meaningful as BGF celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, marking four decades of unwavering support for people living with HIV. Since forming in 1984, BGF has been a lifeline for thousands of people, offering compassionate care, advocacy and services that enable people to live with dignity and hope.
In his acceptance speech, Nick Lawson paid tribute to those who have shaped BGF’s story and the community it serves.
"This award holds special significance for BGF this year as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. For four decades, we have worked tirelessly to ensure that all people living with HIV receive the compassionate care, advocacy and support they deserve. This award ... is not just for BGF, but for everyone who has ever walked through our doors. Each and every one of them has helped shape the legacy we carry with us in 2024,” he said.

The Honour Awards, hosted by our friends at ACON, celebrate individuals and organisations that have made a significant impact on the health, wellbeing and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people in New South Wales. This year’s HIV Hero category recognised BGF’s profound contribution to the HIV community, alongside nominees Dr. Shih-Chi Kao and Stephen Allkins, both of whom Nick Lawson acknowledged as heroes in their own right.
"We share this recognition with Dr. Shih-Chi Kao and Stephen Allkins for their important contributions to our communities,” Nick added. “In our 40th year and into the future, we remain committed to our cause—supporting all people living with HIV to thrive, reducing stigma, advocating for change and equality and expanding our services to reach new communities."
As BGF moves forward into its next chapter, this award highlights the foundation’s enduring impact and continued dedication to creating a healthier, more compassionate world for people living with HIV.
Thank you to ACON and the Honour Awards for this incredible recognition and to everyone who has supported BGF throughout its 40-year journey.
